Grimsby Garden Club Meeting Monday Oct 28 2019

We meet on the last Monday of the month and on October 28th.We are pleased to welcome speaker Kenneth Brown on the topic There are no houseplants.

Ken uses his years of experience in the indoor landscaping business to illustrate that a knowledge of a plant’s natural habitat, (and that’s never indoors,) is beneficial when trying to make that plant thrive, or at least survive, in our homes. Understanding the role of light and water and the recognizing a variety of pests are the essential elements which Ken illustrates to help his audience become happier indoor plant parents.

Gardeners please check us out with a visit!

Social time starts at 7:00pm and the meeting gets underway at 7:30pm with brief announcements and then our speaker.

Bird Friendly Coffee Nesting Tonight!

Station 1 invites you to learn more about how we are connected to coffee growing in Latin America.  Did you know that Grimsby birds winter there?  In the past in Latin America, coffee has been heavily sprayed and fertilized with synthetic fertilizers.  Sprawling massive fields stretch out for miles. While this created high coffee yields it was also devastated the environment and wildlife.  Returning to organic methods and going coffee in concert with a rainforest canopy have resulted in beans with a deeper and richer flavour.

And how does my Grimsby garden relate to coffee growing? The answer is simple:  many of the birds who live in Latin America in the winter are migratory, also live here in the summer.  These include orioles, tanagers, and warblers. What about hummingbirds? The Indigo bunting?

The Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center in Washington, D.C has identified ecologically sustainable farming methods that provide a welcome habitat for birds. They developed certification standards for making bird-friendly coffee.  One can differentiate between shade-grown, organic, fair-trade and bird-friendly.

Back to our gardens in Grimsby where the hummingbirds, Baltimore Orioles and small warblers make their home in summer.  Our job is to grow native trees and plants, so that they have the insects to feed their young.

Marilyn Cornwell will help you get started with ten 'super trees' native to our area, and 12 'native perennial flowers' for your gardens.

Grimsby Garden Club at the Fantasy of Trees

Grimsby Garden Club Decorates in the Fantasy of Trees

November 24th wasGrimsby's Fantasy of Trees decorations day.  This is a festival celebrating Christmas trees sponsored and decorated by Grimsby businesses and individuals.  The trees are raffled, with the proceeds going to local charities.  Trees are decorated in themes - one of the highlights is the Historical Society theme of Grimsby restaurants from years gone by.  Another amazing tree is the Harry Potter tree.  These are only two trees out of 40, so make sure you visit.
Here's Mary McLaren decorating on behalf of the Grimsby Garden Club.  She's definitely on top of things.  Below are Lauren Doig and Lynette Bickham at the Decorators' lunch.
Our Potluck Dinner is Monday, November 28th and starts at 6:00pm.  It is at the Livingston Activity Centre.  Bring your mug for an extra raffle ticket!

Speaker:
Sandi Marr

Eleven years ago, Sandi created a porch pot for her front step in Waterloo, and a neighbour asked her to make one for her own porch.  Soon she found herself receiving more invitations and making more arrangements.  Now she's a floral designer at Flowers Niagara in Welland.  In addition,  she'll create about 200 custom order arrangements this year.  A teacher at heart she takes pleasure in showing others the creative process.  She will take us through her journey with porch pots, and then show us how she creates her urn decorations.  A lucky member will get to take home the urn insert!
