October's Garden of the Month - 398 Maple Ave

October Garden of the Month - 398 Maple Avenue
We hope you all enjoy the stunning display at 398 Maple Avenue for our last Garden of the Month for the year. From fruit farmers to flower growers, Ed Sobkowich Greenhouses have certainly helped to beautify Grimsby throughout the seasons.

We were first struck by the waterfall surrounded by masses of colour. The many calibrachoa in shades of pink, purple, white and red were highlighted by the tall grasses and lovely carpet of pink and purple alyssum. The multi-coloured hanging baskets formed a gigantic ball of breathtaking hues perfectly balanced by the vibrant coleus, petunias, verbena and red canna lilies underneath. Their garden holds many vignettes each just as striking as the next. Do not miss this spectacular Fall garden.

Grimsby Garden of the Month for August 2016

Garden of the Month - August 2016

The garden of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Forsythe on 18 Nelles Road South is aglow with many colours and textures sure to catch the eye. The basic colour scheme of green and white is highlighted with fuchsia impatiens and pink hydrangeas. What makes it so lovely is the striking red maple tree providing the much-needed shade during this dry, hot summer. The many hostas are tucked in between the burst of tall grasses, and augmented with delightful garden sculptures and interesting rock formations. The Japanese Willow, pruned to form a canopy above the rose barbary, provides a tranquil, shady spot to sit and watch the world go by. Thank you for adding to the natural beauty of Grimsby.

Garden of the Month - June 2016

Driving by Dan-yelle and Alec Lozecki’s lovely home on 23 Nelles Road, we were struck by the colourful, eye-catching variety of trees and shrubs accented by spring perennials and annuals.  Outside of the black wrought-iron fence, peonies and hydrangeas surround a weeping fir tree.  Framing the front porch are a weeping Nootka and a Juniper standard topiary.  While in between, sand cherries, bright green and yellow evergreens with pitentilla azaleas, astilbes and quick starts add another dimension.  A lace-leaf Japanese maple and a standard blue spruce compliment astilbe and lily of the valley. Their front porch railing abounds with baskets filled with colourful pink and coral geraniums, impatiens, and white bacopa.  In order to make use of an old tree on the front lawn, they converted it into a table surrounded by benches with white stones….a comfortable spot to stop and admire the serenity of their garden. Their use of colour and texture are truly beautifully balanced throughout this lovely garden.

Garden of the Month for October

Congratulations to Jo and Ken Agnew

Our fall Garden of the Month is alive with cheerful yellow marigolds and orange-red geraniums interspersed with yews, hostas, euonymus and grasses varying in tones from blue-grey to bright yellow.  The repetition of planting pleases the eye by being offset with a variety of evergreens, cedars, boxwood and blue spruce.  It is a formal yet causal planting as it winds up the driveway toward the front of the house.

Please make sure to drive by this lovely garden at 62 Lake Street near Nelles Park. This is the Grimsby Garden Club’s last garden for the year. We would like to thank everyone for helping to make Grimsby the beautiful town that it is.

The Garden of the Month chosen by members of the Grimsby Garden Club runs from May to October each year. Winning gardens are chosen based on our criteria for curb appeal, colour, design and maintenance.

Grimsby Garden Club's Garden of the Month - September

Our Garden of the Month for September! Congratulations to Bonnie and Bob McNeil
What catches one's eye when driving by the home of Bonnie and Bob McNeil are the bright red begonias surrounding the front garden. Amidst this splash of colour is an array of burning bush, blue nesting spruce, lace leaf fountain grass and a spectacular Peegee hydrangea by the front walkway. Contrasting yellow coreopsis and an array of greenery wind around this lovely fall garden. The beautiful rusty-red Forest Pansy Redbud makes quite a statement in the left front corner of the garden, while the bright green hanging ferns welcome visitors to the front porch. Please take the time to drive by the McNeil's wonderful garden at 25 Nelles Road.

August Garden of the Month - 17 Kerman Ave in Grimsby

Congratulations to Wendy and Paul Phelps

When you go by the magnificent home of Wendy and Paul Phelps, the ivy-covered pedestals with beautiful white, cast iron pots spilling over with begonias catch your eye.  These bright spots of colour trail all through their lovely formal gardens right up to the front door.  Their cheerful variegated hostas are set off by a variety of flowers at the right of the house. All of this, along with the boxwood hedges and interesting front walk make 17 Kerman Avenue well worth visiting.

Garden of the Month - June 2015

Congratulations to Annie Marie and Brian Hutton!
Their lovely garden caught our eye as we searched for our June Garden of the Month. The contrasting colors of the white Korean lilac, the snowflake viburnum, the deep red dianthus, along with the rich bronze of the curly witch hazel all blended together creating a feast for the eyes. In the center of their garden is a small feature garden included a brilliant red anemone, a burning bush, rose Barbary and a bronze sedum surrounded a playful wrought iron bird. Artfully placed about the garden are bird feeders, bird baths and statues to add a sense of whimsy. The front porch is decorated with beautiful container arrangements.

Grimsby Garden Club - May's Garden of the Month - Maria and Peter Muffels!

Garden of the Month - May
Congratulations to Maria and Peter Muffels
After a particularly cold winter, spring has finally arrived. It was not easy to find gardens that were in bloom at the beginning of May, but we found the gorgeous garden of Maria and Peter Muffels at 33 Garden Drive. A yellow blaze of ground cover flows through the varied greens of tulips, iris, euonymus and cotoneaster up to the lovely clump birch tree. Across from this is a grouping of Hinoki Dwarf Cypress, Nine Bark shrubs, Bleeding heart and a variety of sedum and colourful shrubbery. Please drive by and take a look at this beautiful spring garden. We are sure it will bring a smile to your face.
